Rebecca Pierce is a practicing multidisciplinary artist.
Without formal training, she embraces painting, drawing, sculpture, and photography. Over the past twenty years she has been a finalist in more than sixty notable prizes and awards. Rebecca’s CV reflects the diversity of application within her art practice.
Rebecca is an Australian artist and designer.
In 2001, after nearly twenty years involved in the fashion, design and licensing fields, Rebecca started painting and exhibiting on a full-time basis. She has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout Australia and overseas. Rebecca has been a finalist in major art prizes including the Glencore Percival Portrait Prize, the Mosman Art Prize, the Heysen Art Prize, the Fishers Ghost Art Prize, the Hawkesbury Art Prize, The Lester Prize, the ANL Maritime Art Prize, and the Hillview Sculpture Award. Rebecca’s work is represented in corporate and private collections in Australia and internationally.
Rebecca primarily works with paint, inks and fine points on canvas, and paper. Her work often explores aspects of the natural and urban landscape, social issues, and everyday crusades. Rebecca’s rendering often blurs the line between fine art, design, and the excessively ornate.
For Rebecca the reading of the human face in portraiture and the understanding of the natural landscape has parallels. For her, interpreting the effects of emotional strain and psychological trauma on one’s visage is akin to aesthetically documenting the resulting aftermath of a once pristine landscape ravaged by tempest, fire and drought.
For example, recording a natural landscapes’ response to deforestation and mining is not dissimilar to a human’s reaction to unwanted physical challenges. Both draw on defensive responses as protection. Capturing these graphic elements is an attempt to elicit a strong response from the viewer.
The unpredictability of Rebecca’s choice of subject, frequently rendered in the third dimension, can simultaneously create tension and feelings of discomfort laced with elements of playfulness.
Rebecca currently lives and works in Sydney, balancing art making with her roles of running an art gallery, design and fashion practices and renovation projects. The graphic design work extends to corporate commissions as well as not-for-profit projects and community service.
The forms in my work are often in the act of becoming, evolving, or resisting. The diversity of medium, colour and texture can often be utilised to highlight states of flux, change and contrast.
Tapping into the ever flowing and sparking subconscious, where process and movement, both organic and contrived, is a constant can often lead to primal and sometimes tribal inferences coming to the fore.
Frequently, I reference the frenetic pace we place upon ourselves, conscious or unconsciously, and the suggestion of what we impose, berate, and complain of, but do not always acknowledge, amend, rectify, or accept.
Technically, I am interested in making inks, sections of paper, aqua enamels, and impasto acrylics more visceral and physical, with a body and texture of their own. The conscious choice of diversity of medium within a single work, is in anticipation that the contrasts will create energy within the subject.
Luminous resins, shouldering sections of print, nestled against thin washes of colour, bordering swathes of voluminous texture is there to drive this message further. This is to build friction within the opposing medium, the contrived placement of pulsating tones and colours aspire to communicate agitation, movement, and response.
The process of painting is for me a metaphor for life and creation. As we are a part of nature our energies flow through what we do and often the materials we use. The paint can be imbued with a sense of the artist themselves. Applying and moving the medium around the canvas, offering the medium its own flow and path, and at other times controlling and orchestrating its position and presence.
This for me creates an exciting positive tension, delving again into another state of flux with sometimes resolution and at other times the pent-up energy is held tight, pulsing, ready if allowed to rupture and escape. These random movements, both innate and subliminal, engendering form and structure, can often provide a sense of verity and validity.
